The Tamil people in the North-East are continuously denied their right to remember their dead. Tamils who attend remembrance events, such as the Tamil Genocide Remembrance Day or Maaveerar Naal (Heroes’ Day), are continuously harassed, intimidated, and surveilled by security forces. Some have been arrested under the PTA for attending these events. The Sri Lankan state has also destroyed all Maaveerar Thuyilum Illams (LTTE cemeteries) during and after the war, as well as other Tamil memorials, such as a memorial for the Mullivaikkal massacre at the University of Jaffna. Despite the suppression, Tamils continue to resist the state to remember their dead and the Tamil liberation struggle.
